Meta has introduced direct messaging (DM) to its Threads platform, a move that significantly enhances the app’s social capabilities and positions it as a stronger competitor in the microblogging space. With this update, users aged 18 and above can now send private, one-on-one messages directly within Threads, removing the need to switch to Instagram for private conversations. The feature is currently limited to followers or mutual Instagram followers, a measure designed to foster safer and more positive interactions.
At launch, Threads DMs support essential features such as text messaging, preset emoji reactions, muting conversations, and reporting spam. Meta has placed a strong emphasis on safety and privacy, implementing age restrictions and planning to introduce more granular privacy controls, including the ability to manage who can send messages and handle requests from non-followers. However, unlike WhatsApp, Threads DMs do not offer end-to-end encryption, which has prompted some privacy concerns, though Meta has indicated it will continue to refine the feature based on user feedback.
In addition to DMs, Meta has rolled out the Threads Highlighter, a tool that spotlights trending topics and notable conversations to help users discover and join popular discussions. Looking ahead, Meta plans to expand Threads’ messaging capabilities with group chats, inbox filters, and more advanced controls, reinforcing its commitment to making Threads a destination for meaningful, real-time conversations and a safer, more engaging social experience.
